The problem of substance abuse affects students and their communities throughout higher education. The causes vary. Sometimes it is associated with the stress of a new environment or the pressures associated with an academic program. Sometimes it develops from the independence or choice presented by their new living situation.

Whatever the reason, much has been done at both the institutional and national levels to help address this concern. If you have a concern about yourself or a friend, it is strongly recommended that you seek help from a local professional. One to one personal care is always the most effective in assessing and treating any problems. If you are affiliated with a college or university, the Counseling Centers often have staff who specialize in the treatment of substance abuse. Should care outside of the Counseling Center be needed, be aware that most insurance plans provide coverage for substance abuse consultation.
